Founded in 2021, the Healthy Planet Action Coalition (HPAC) is an international group of over 200 participants from over a dozen countries advocating urgent action to restore a safe and healthy planet. Who We Are Because of delay in action, Earth systems are beginning to collapse with untenable futures that are baked in unless we restore our climate to cooler than today. Climate science is slow. Delay has prematurely forced the activation of our Earth systems tipping collapses, and our current climate change solutions can no longer create a safe world.

Mission Statement

We advocate the world community urgently come together to carry out an equitable, science-based plan of action that includes what HPAC calls, the Climate Triad:

  • researching, field testing and deploying one or more large-scale cooling influence(s) perhaps initially in polar regions and applying local and regional cooling measures that also support adaptation,
  • accelerating emissions reductions with an early prioritization of short-lived climate drivers, and
  • deploying large scale carbon removal to draw down legacy greenhouse gas

The goal of these actions, along with enhanced and transformative adaptation and regeneration measures, is to reduce the average global temperature increase to well below 1°C in the coming decades. Doing so will sharply reduce weather extremes, slow or stop the collapse of key ecosystems, and help ensure a livable planet for humanity and the natural world.

EMERGENCY CLIMATE RESTORATION THE CLIMATE TRIAD Thirty years of delay and greenhouse gases in our sky have doubled, prematurely activating climate tipping. Our climate culture has failed and a coalition of international scientists now says urgent emergency action is needed that was previously proposed for the worst-case scenario 50 years from now. Earth’s temperature has exceeded the evolutionary boundaries of her systems, creating degradation that will not stop unless the thing that caused the degradation to begin is removed. This is climate tipping, it is now active, and only cooling, or restoring our climate from today can stop it. Video Description

Real Science

Using the most recent published science, we now know that our current climate culture of net zero emissions and warming to 1.5 degrees C above normal cannot stop existing degradation of Earth systems. Where must be a sea change of our climate culture to trust our engineers as we always trust them, to implement existing cooling and atmospheric removal strategies and processes proven to cool our climate safely back to within the evolutionary boundaries of our Earth systems at less that 1 degree C warming above normal. This latest science also says we must cool our climate back to normal by about mid-century, or risk tipping responses with natural feedback emissions that dwarf humankind’s.

Real Solutions

The climate triad offers can restore our climate with the global average temperature back to within our Earth systems evolutionary boundaries at below 1 degree C above normal. Real solutions to temporarily cool our climate have been widespread in our global culture for over a century and they must be implemented on an emergency basis while we develop more efficient  strategies to create a sustainable future. Real solutions also exist to implement emergency atmospheric removal and these are not only widespread in industry, but fundamental for to industrial processes for more than a century.

Real Hope

Restoring a safe climate –cooling from today– back to within the natural variation of our old climate, will stop Earth systems tipping collapses so we can avoid natural feedback emission that dwarf humankind’s. It will return the repeatedly unprecedented extreme weather events back to their normal rare occurrences, and it will eliminate warming-caused injustice and inequity. Cooling our climate gives hope, where our current climate culture’s additional warming creates untenable futures. Cooling our climate will protect and preserve our natural world and humanity – especially the most vulnerable people and least advantaged nations, whereas our current climate culture of 1.5 degrees C warming above normal gives rise to untenable futures. There is hope and the solutions are easy, w just have to be motivated to restore, not allow further warming.

NET ZERO CANNOT COOL Our climate culture of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees C above normal only limits future warming, it cannot restore. Timing is critical. We must cool our climate back to within the evolutionary boundaries of our Earth systems before degradation becomes so extreme that the systems cannot self-restore. This point of no return for most activated tipping systems is about mid-century. If restoration fails, the results will be natural emissions dwarfing humankind’s. Later is too late. Our current climate culture’s end-of-century mitigation date (2100) causes irreversible tipping responses previously projected for the end of the 21st century with the worst-case scenario.

COOL, REDUCE, REMOVE

 

Restoration can only be effective if we pursue all three legs of the Climate Triad at the same time: cool, reduce, and remove.

By directly cooling our climate, we can buy time to implement a climate pollution treatment infrastructure to rapidly remove excess, human emitted greenhouse gas climate pollution from our atmosphere, so we can create a sustainable fossil fuel emissions culture – before it is too late.
